Online Measurement of Large Traffic Aggregates on Commodity Switches

چکیده
Traffic measurement plays an important role in many network-management tasks, such as anomaly detection and traffic engineering. However, existing solutions either rely on custom hardware designed for a specific task, or introduce a high overhead for data collection and analysis. Instead, we argue that a practical trafficmeasurement solution should run on commodity network elements, support a range of measurement tasks, and provide accurate results with low overhead. Inspired by the capabilities of OpenFlow switches, we explore a measurement framework where switches match packets against a small collection of rules and update traffic counters for the highest-priority match. A separate controller can read the counters and dynamically tune the rules to quickly “drill down” to identify large traffic aggregates. As the first step towards designing measurement algorithms for this framework, we design and evaluate a hierarchical heavy hitters algorithm that identifies large traffic aggregates, while striking a good balance between measurement accuracy and switch overhead.

OpenFlow-Based Server Load Balancing Gone Wild
Today’s data centers host online services on multiple servers, with a front-end load balancer directing each client request to a particular replica. Dedicated load balancers are expensive and quickly become a single point of failure and congestion. The OpenFlow standard enables an alternative approach where the commodity network switches divide traffic over the server replicas, based on packet-...
متن کاملNiagara: Scalable Load Balancing on Commodity Switches
Internet service providers rely on load balancers to distribute client requests for many web services over backend servers. Dedicated load-balancer appliances are expensive and do not scale easily with traffic demand. Instead, future load balancers should be built from smaller commodity components. Rather than rely exclusively on specialpurpose load-balancing software, we argue that data center...
متن کاملDeclarative Network Path Queries
Effective management of computer networks is crucial to ensure the availability and performance of “always online” Internet services that we depend on. Towards this goal, programmatic tools can remove slow and expensive human involvement in management. Recently, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology has eased programmatic control of networks, but there has been little attention on progra...
متن کاملContention-free Complete Exchange Algorithm on Clusters
To construct a large commodity cluster, a hierarchical network is generally adopted for connecting the host machines, where a Gigabit backbone switch connects a few commodity switches with uplinks to achieve scaled bisectional bandwidth. This type of interconnection usually results in link contention and has congestion developed at the uplink ports. Moreover, the non-deterministic delays on sch...
متن کاملSoftCell: Taking Control of Cellular Core Networks
Existing cellular networks suffer from inflexible and expensive equipment, and complex control-plane protocols. To address these challenges, we present SoftCell, a scalable architecture for supporting fine-grained policies for mobile devices in cellular core networks. The SoftCell controller realizes high-level service polices by directing traffic over paths that traverse a sequence of middlebo...
